I love your quote at the beginning. How true it is of most of us at one time or other.

And I love your original additions to the wizarding world, especially: the Ministry's 'magistrate ghosts', the idea of finger 'calluses from decades of wand use', and the 'Certificate of Recognition for Studious Composure' (sounds like young Fudge fakes a scholarly attitude exceptionally well).

Darned if your Fudge doesn't sound just like a current lame-duck political leader I know. That's a bit sobering, but the rest is fun!

I'm glad I peeked at this. The first chapter telling of Fudge's exit and his colleague's ignoring him emphasizes what must have been a terrible personal disgrace. You captured quite well what must have been Fudge's horror at coming on a scene like that. I found the idea that Fudge might have heard conflicting testimony and said nothing quite chilling. I hope you plan to write a little about Fudge's feelings when he gave Sirius the news paper. This is a very polished and enjoyable story about a character whose personality is very difficult to "enjoy".

These are interesting little insights into Fudge's character. He's someone who, whilst not always meaning well doesn't really mean harm. His ambition has outstripped his abilities, a big head and a weak mind, and he has caused a lot of damage to the magical community as a result - he's such a typical politician! You've really got he's inner thoughts spot on. I'm looking forward to your next chapter.

I particularly liked your first few paragraphs, where you made Fudge at once ridiculous and pitiable... no farewell from Rufus, a tight squeeze through the new door, buttons popping, leaky ceilings... It was funny and vivid. Great start.

A very good start. Fudge as a social climbing academic laggard is exactly what one would expect from his schoolboy years.
