I really like this story. It illustrates that death is inevitable, but how we face it is a choice. It asks us to hold to the precious things in life. It's a beautiful message.

I like Snape's presence, too. It's oddly comforting. She didn't die alone, even if she doesn't know it. Well, even without Snape, she doesn't die alone. She dies with Dumbledore beside her and with the rest of those she loved in her heart.

Your core line is wonderful:

"A rake of his mind against her mind, but Dorcas remembered firelight, and wine, and flushed faces and smiles, remembered dark eyes and precious things"

Nice subtle integration between story and title. It worked really well.

I loved this! I always enjoy reading interpretations of more obscure characters, and this one does not disappoint. Your story is both tragic and hopeful, a combination that suits the nature of the first Order. Bravo!

Oh, that was great! Terrifying, but great: the last sentence, especially. I love how you separated the final clause from the previous paragraph. It really highlights the abrupt transition from her final thoughts to her death -- the "and" suggests that she was about to think something else, like "it's over" or something to that effect, but she lost consciousness too quickly.
