A Different Perspective
Luna sat quietly in the corner, leafing through her upside down Quibbler as they waited for the others to arrive for DA practice. More than once Luna noticed Neville glancing over at her a little nervously. He appeared to be trying to work up the nerve to speak. After a moment Luna smiled briefly, shook her head, folded the paper and set it aside.
In her vaguely dreamy, unfocused way, she murmured, "If you're thinking the question that loudly, you might as well ask it, Neville."
Neville jumped, startled. Then he blushed and began stuttering, "L-l-l-luna?"
"Um, L-l-l-l-una? I wanted to ask you... "
Waving her hand gently toward the crystal ball in the corner of the room she intoned, "We are all driven to question as the fates have decreed, Neville." She glanced down to hide her half smile at the slightly apprehensive expression that crossed his face. She thought to herself, Don't worry, Neville, I'm just teasing, and that bat Trelawney is nowhere in sight. Go ahead, ask. I know what you're going to say, anyway. After several moments of waiting in silence Luna breathed a small sigh, barely more than a puff of air, and reached for her paper again.
Neville looked down at the floor as the tips of his ears turned red, and finally blurted out all in one breath, "Would you like to go to Hogsmeade with me next weekend?"
"Would I like to go where?" she whispered in amazement.
Muttering, "Never mind, forget it," Neville began to turn away.
"Wait, wait, Neville, WAIT!" Luna reached for his arm. "Yes, I'd like that very much. I'm sorry, I just wasn't expecting you to ask that!"
Neville grinned shyly. "You would? Great!" He paused. "Um…what question did you think I would ask?"
Going back to the window seat and inverting the Quibbler once again, Luna patted the seat beside her. "I thought you were wondering why I always read Daddy's paper upside down."
Neville blushed again. "Well I am curious about that, but you don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
Tapping the paper with her wand, Luna smiled and whispered, “Aparecium Lunae.” A shimmery, elegant script scrolled across the page. Neville noticed in bemusement that the articles were all still there, but they'd shifted to the edges of the paper, so as not to interfere with whatever was happening.
"Luna, what is that? It's amazing!"
"Oh, it's just notes from Daddy. He always charms my paper personally; he includes little comments with background information about the stories, like where he's tracked the Snorkacks, and what new creatures have been discovered. I miss him desperately when I'm here at Hogwarts. He misses me too; this helps us keep in touch - it's been just the two of us for so long, with Mum gone."
"How does it work?"
"You know about Aparecium making invisible ink appear? Well, Lunae is Daddy's little joke to me; he says the script looks like moonlight and sounds like my name. That extra bit of spellwork keeps our messages private. He adds the charm into my paper, and then nothing happens if someone tries just Aparecium. I've been telling him all about you; today he mentioned that he thought I should tell you about our paper. Look, up in that corner, he says 'Hi Neville!' Isn't he amazing?”
Neville saw the script glowing at him and blushed an even brighter red. "All about me? Why have you been telling him about me?"
With a soft smile on her face, Luna slowly folded the paper. Other DA members began arriving and as Neville turned to greet their friends he wondered if he had really heard, or only imagined, Luna whispering, "Maybe I'll tell you later.”
Author's notes: I own nothing, and would like to thank J.K. Rowling for letting me play with such a fantastical, magical world. It's hers, all hers.
Special thanks to my Beta reader, Chary, for working with me. All errors are mine; Chary tried to keep me straight!
