A/N: I’ve set this in the fifth year, and Hermione is oblivious to many
obvious signs that Ron’s shown. She is madly in love and cannot seem to
connect her dream world with the reality. And Ron isn’t helping…
Have you ever loved somebody so much it makes you cry
Have you ever needed something so bad you can’t sleep at night
Have you ever tried to find the words but they don’t come out right
Have you ever
Have you ever
Hermione Granger was not one of those girls. You know which ones; the
ones that always have stupid crushes on all the boys. They swoon and sigh
when they’re in love with them, and when it’s all over, they cry their
hearts out. They cry all through the night, remembering every experience
they had shared with their current significant other. But Hermione was
not one of those girls. Although there had been times when she had cried,
all alone at night, in her four-poster. No, it hadn’t been when she had
decided to break up with Viktor Krum. It wasn’t any night in particular,
after any specific event. It was normally on some night, when she and
her two best friends were just hanging out in the common room. Nothing
special was happening. But it was on those nights that she cried the hardest,
because it was on those nights she knew that he could never see her as
anything more than his best friend.
Have you ever you ever been in love, been in love so bad
You’d do anything to make them understand
Have you ever had someone steal your heart away
You’d give anything to make them feel the
same
But she never dreamed of actually telling him out loud. Sure, there were
times when they would just be sitting in the common room, and he would
look up at her and she would plead with her eyes to him, ‘Please love
me!’ But he never understood. "Having trouble Hermione?" he
would ask. And that was all. Maybe a few chuckles, but nothing else. He
didn’t understand that she was begging him to make the pain in her heart
go away with just one kiss and three little words.
Have you ever searched for words to get you in their heart
But you don’t know what to say, and you don’t know where to start
Have you ever loved somebody so much it makes you cry
Have you ever needed something so bad you can’t sleep at night
Have you ever tried to find the words but they don’t come out right
Have you ever
Have you ever
She had tried before, but he never seemed to understand. He never realized
that she was talking about him and her and love. There had been one time,
she had been sure he would understand, that night after the Yule Ball.
But no. She hadn’t meant to tell him, but it didn’t matter, he was as
oblivious as ever. She was pretty sure Harry had heard and understood,
and he hadn’t even heard the whole of the conversation. But the important
person was oblivious. After being angry for a few days, he had moved on
and they were right back were they had started. Just friends. Best friends,
sure, but it was still just friends to her. As Hermione rolled over in
her bed, unable to sleep because she was so preoccupied by her thoughts,
she felt a tear brush down her cheek. Angrily, she brushed it aside. If
he couldn’t take a hint, she wasn’t going to cry over it. Once again,
a tear floated down. She wiped that one off as well, but it was to no
avail. By the time that one was gone, it was replaced by another, and
another, and another.
Have you ever found the one you dreamed of all your life
You’d do just about anything to look into their eyes
Have you finally found that one you’d give your heart to
Only to find that one won’t give their
heart to you
The next night, Hermione sat in the common room, her eyes drooping. She
heard someone walk into the common room, and her eyes lit up as she saw
Ron enter. But he breezed past her and walked right over to Harry.
"Harry, we need to talk," she overheard.
"Yeah Ron, what’s up?"
"What do you think of Hannah Abbot? You know, the Hufflepuff?"
Hermione leaned over, slightly more.
"I don’t really know her, why?"
"Well, we both had detentions and we ended up working together.
We got to talking, and I just kinda kissed her. I don’t know where it
came from, but she kissed back. And I’m thinking of asking her out. What
do you think?" Hermione felt her heart skip a beat, she sat straight
up, and felt as if she were dying. As if the words that Ron had spoken
had clasped themselves around her heart and squeezed hard.
"That’s great Ron!" Harry exclaimed. "Go for it! And it
might help the situation with…"
"Harry!" Ron cut off.
Hermione felt tears welling up, and decided to make a quick exit.
"Hermione, it’s only nine!" Ron called after her.
"Well, I’m tired," she called back lamely, not pausing in her
dash for the stairs.
Have you ever closed your eyes and dreamed that they were there
And all you can do is wait for that day when they will care
Have you ever loved somebody so much it makes you cry
Makes you wanna break down and cry
Have you ever needed something so bad you can’t sleep at night
Have you ever tried to find the words but they don’t come out right

"I am not one of them," she told herself, pleading for the
tears to stop. She knew she had too, otherwise her eyes would be red in
the morning and Ron might suspect something. Ron. Ah! His name made her
want to break something. She stood and chucked her pillow across the room,
knocking over the array of perfume bottles Lavender Brown had scattered
everywhere. Hermione gave up, and gave into her needs. She sobbed until
her eyes were dry then fell into a restless sleep where she dreamed of
good things and happy endings.
What do I gotta do to get you in my arms?
What do I gotta say to get to your heart?
To make you understand, that I need you
next to me
I gotta get you in my world, cause baby I can’t sleep
The next morning, she looked into the mirror and realized with happiness
that her red, puffy eyes had lost all color and puffiness. Her night had
been full of good dreams where she and Ron lived happily ever after. Maybe
it wasn’t true in real life, but it was good enough for her. Or so she
thought. When she walked into the Great Hall, she found Ron and Hannah
Abbot making ‘love’ eyes at each other across the Hall, Harry nudging
Ron in the ribs for encouragement. She tried to ignore it and eat, but
it was impossible. It seemed as though Hannah was sitting directly behind
her, because every time she looked up, his eyes were looking in her eyes.
Her heartbeat would quicken for a second or two, until she remembered
that he was looking at a pretty girl behind her.

Staring into the fire, Hermione watched as the flames danced and leaped
throughout the fireplace. They seemed to understand that she needed to
be cheered up.
"Hey Hermione! You ok?" Ron stood next to her, looking
genuinely concerned.
Bravely, Hermione decided to go for it, "Yeah, Ron. I need
to tell you something."
"What’s that?"
"I..Ron…I…" But Ron, telling Hannah he would be right
there, interrupted her.
"Sorry Hermione. What was that?"
"I…I need help with this, uh, this extra studying for, uh,
History of Magic. It’s all about Quidditch and I just don’t understand
the rules."
"Extra studying? Well, at least it’s about something interesting.
Later, ok?" She nodded her head in agreement and watched his back
as he walked away from her. She had blown her chance, and now, there would
be no other chance. Maybe someday, far, far away, in happily ever after,
when she was finally happy, she would tell him. And they would laugh at
how silly they had been in their young age. But for now, it just hurt.
And all she could do was cry, and hope that someday, before happily ever
after, he would realize the truth and make all her pain go away with just
one kiss and three little words.
